Try going Italian away from the city! In the middle of Liliw Laguna, the sandals capital of the Philippines, is a charming little place called Arabela. Ran and managed by the Camelo couple, this restaurant offers Italian cuisine with generous servings at reasonable prices. Make sure to try their choco lava cake for dessert.
While in Liliw, visit a historic landmark, the St. John the Baptist Church, which was founded in the early 1600’s, and check out their market for fresh “pako”, fruits & crab lets. And, of course, don’t forget to buy a few pairs of sandals!
Climb a volcano. On Valentine’s weekend, hiking to the crater of Taal Volcano, which happens to be an active volcano, might just warm the heart. The trail to the crater is open so leave Manila early and take a banca to the volcano island from Talisay. After the hike, try some of the local delicacies like the maliputo or tawilis. Drive around the lake to the little town of Taal and visit the Basilica of St. Martin de Tours which is the largest Catholic Church in Asia.
Put stars in the eyes of your special someone, literally. Stargazing is a simple but a very romantic idea for Valentine’s weekend. It is best done away from the city lights and the pollution giving you a reason to be away on a road trip–Eco Saddle Camp in Lake Caliraya is an ideal place. Bring a blanket, a mat and cuddle up under the stars while talking about your dreams or reminiscing about your first dates to rekindle the romance. Show off some knowledge–stars twinkle because of the earth’s atmosphere but my eyes twinkle because I see you. Additional note, it’s a full moon on the 15th and the moon rises at 06:15 pm, so look east.
Hike & watch the sunset on one of the summits of Mt. Batulao in Batangas. This activity is recommended for those with some experience in climbing because of the steep ascents on loose ground. Take with you some trail food and warm drinks as you cuddle up while waiting for the orange sun to set on the horizon. Carefully hike back and have a spa moment in one of the spas located in Tagaytay.
If you haven’t decided to dive into tying the knot or having a family then consider diving into a world of new adventures. Discover diving this weekend in one of the dive resorts in Anilao, Batangas. My personal favorite is Dive & Trek since they offer Intro to Diving lessons at at affordable rates, which is inclusive of an overnight stay and four buffet meals.
